campaign for affordable birth control

What if Congress passed a law that made the price of your groceries go up by 900 percent? There would be an instant uproar! And you can bet the problem would be fixed, immediately. Because of a technical error made by Congress in 2005, the cost of birth control has sky rocketed on college campuses and in health centers across the country. virginia general assembyl session summary

Each year, there are 15-20 anti-choice bills introduced in the Virginia General Assembly, including attempts to close clinics and limit access to FDA-approved methods of birth control. Virginia's legislature is so extreme that even the Birth Control Protection Act, a measure to simply define birth control and protect it from Virginia's laws restricting abortion, has failed in recent sessions. The Birth Control Protection Act is part of Planned Parenthood's effort to put prevention first and engage with reasonable legislators of all political parties on common-sense, common-ground solutions like family planning and sexuality education.

victory in virginia: anti-choice budget amendments defeated

Planned Parenthood of Virginia hailed the decision by the House and Senate budget conferees to remove an anti-family planning amendment offered by State Senator Ken Cuccinelli (R-37) to the House Budget bill (HB 30). Senator Cuccinelli’s amendment specifically targeted Planned Parenthood from receiving state funding for prevention health care services including gynecological exams, pap smears, cancer screenings, contraception, and testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections. We are especially grateful to our friends on the Budget Conference Committee who fought hard for women's health: Senator Edd Houck (D-17), Senator Janet Howell (D-32), Senator Dick Saslaw (D-35) and Delegate Johnny Joannou (D-79).
